Anthropic plans to commit 5% of its shares to public benefit fund
The company said the wholly owned fund could support nonprofit donations or direct payments, with governance details to follow.

Anthropic said it will allocate 5% of its shares to a new public benefit fund intended to support projects with societal benefits. The company will also have the option of adding another 2% each time its value increases by 50%.
The fund will operate as an entity wholly owned by Anthropic. Potential uses include sizable contributions to traditional nonprofits and payments directly to particular populations, the company said. It has not yet detailed how decisions about funding recipients will be made.
Anthropic has already committed $200 million to research AI’s effects on employment. The company said the speed of AI development may require more ambitious responses and that the fund would have flexibility to pursue them.
The announcement comes amid growing public disapproval of the AI industry. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has characterized the problem as a crisis of trust. The company said it would provide further information about the fund’s structure and governance in the coming months.
