The company said its crawling terms applied only to advertising and business products and did not change its use of web crawlers.

Meta has removed a provision from its commercial terms that prompted concerns about whether it authorized the company to scrape publishers’ websites for AI training, according to a media report.

The recently added wording said Meta could use material from websites, domains and URLs associated with business accounts for purposes including product development, research, training and maintaining the integrity of its services.

Legal experts cited in a media report said the language could give Meta permission to collect website content from publishers holding Meta business accounts and use it to train its AI models.

A Meta spokesperson said the update did not alter the company’s web-crawling practices. In a subsequent statement, Meta said the consolidated crawling terms covered only its advertising and business products. The company said it had clarified that scope in the terms and reiterated that its use of web crawlers had not changed.
