Waymo announced on October 16 that Toronto is its intended entry point into Canada, with an autonomous ride-hailing service planned for 2028. The Alphabet-owned business is pursuing the deployment as part of its expansion beyond the United States.

The company said preparations for deploying its Waymo Driver will involve mapping Toronto and engaging with local authorities. It intends to partner with Element Fleet Management to operate the fleet.

Waymo said its plans include hundreds of jobs over time, covering customer service, vehicle fleet maintenance, validation driving and other operational work. It already offers commercial robotaxi rides in several U.S. cities, and its expansion plans include Tokyo and London.
