SpaceX is seeking agreements with cellular infrastructure providers covering at least 80,000 U.S. sites, an October 22 media report said, citing people familiar with the matter. Such arrangements could move the company closer to establishing a fourth wireless carrier with nationwide coverage.

The reported negotiations involve Crown Castle. SpaceX is also purchasing low-band spectrum nationwide. TD Cowen put the estimated cost of a national terrestrial network above $80 billion, with construction taking many years and requiring billions in further spending.

Crown Castle's U.S. tower portfolio numbers about 40,000, compared with about 42,000 U.S. sites at American Tower. Privately held Vertical Bridge owns around 18,000.

Asked about possible SpaceX and Amazon leases, Crown Castle CEO Christian Hillabrant said discussions encompassed all parties, without identifying individual customers. SpaceX and the three infrastructure companies did not immediately provide comment.

In extended trading, shares in AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile recorded declines ranging from 4.2% to 5%.
