HD Hyundai Co said on October 23 that it had reached an agreement with Kiewit Corp for a new shipyard in the United States. Building work is set to start in 2027, and the facility is expected to open in 2029 and generate about 3,000 jobs in the country.

The companies will also establish a joint venture to examine opportunities involving commercial ships and US Navy support vessels. Its scope will include the potential supply of ship blocks and modules to other US shipyards, Hyundai said.

Hyundai said it expects the facility to increase US shipbuilding capacity, support the industry's revival and deepen shipbuilding cooperation between South Korea and the United States.

South Korea has pledged $150 billion for the US shipbuilding sector. That commitment forms part of $350 billion in investment funds it agreed to direct to US projects in exchange for US tariff reductions.
