SK Hynix abandons Solidigm US IPO plan, citing market volatility

The chipmaker said it would keep exploring funding options for its subsidiary and that the decision did not alter Solidigm’s growth prospects or investment needs.

SK Hynix said on October 23 that it had decided not to pursue a US initial public offering for Solidigm, citing financial market volatility and recent stock-price trends. The South Korean chipmaker said a wider pullback in semiconductor shares led it to reconsider the listing despite strong performance at both businesses.

The company said it would continue assessing ways to finance Solidigm’s expansion and improve shareholder value, including the timing, size and funding of future investments. It said the decision left its assessment of Solidigm’s growth prospects and investment requirements unchanged.

Based in Rancho Cordova, California, Solidigm makes NAND flash memory and solid-state drives. SK Hynix had weighed a listing among several funding options as artificial intelligence drove increased demand for memory chips.

SK Hynix said capital raised through an IPO could have strengthened consolidated cash flow to finance production facilities and support dividends, buybacks and share cancellations. It also said a listing could have made Solidigm’s growth potential more visible to investors, arguing that its own valuation did not fully reflect that potential.

Weeks earlier, SK Hynix had said it was examining options to improve Solidigm’s competitiveness, with no decision reached at that stage.
