The French startup says organizations can run the downloadable model on their own systems, limiting reliance on an outside provider.

French artificial intelligence startup Mistral made Large 4 publicly available on October 29, saying the model is intended to help organizations find and repair cybersecurity weaknesses. Anyone can download it and operate it independently.

Mistral said the public version improves on the model it introduced three weeks earlier. Testing by government and corporate users helped strengthen its performance, according to the company.

The ability to run the software locally distinguishes it from leading systems such as Google's Gemini, which users primarily access through online services. Mistral said running Large 4 on an organization's own systems could lessen its reliance on a third-party provider. It called Large 4 its strongest openly available cybersecurity model, entering a field dominated by Chinese models.

Pierre Stock, Mistral's vice president of science, said access cannot be contained once a model is distributed. He said that protects users against losing access, while also allowing anyone to use the technology.
