Meta Platforms will lose its chief global affairs officer, Joel Kaplan, after a 15-year tenure, a company spokesperson said on October 20. Dina Powell McCormick, Meta’s president and vice chairman, will assume responsibility for external affairs alongside her existing duties.

The announcement comes before the November 3 midterm elections. McCormick worked in Donald Trump’s first presidential administration. Kaplan, a veteran Republican strategist, held the post of deputy chief of staff for policy under George W. Bush.

Meta promoted Kaplan to its senior policy job as it reduced fact-checking in the United States, dropped diversity initiatives and worked to strengthen its ties with Trump.

The company also faces questions about artificial intelligence, including safety and the technology industry’s increasing presence in local communities. Trump has said that technology executives, including Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, agreed to create voluntary standards for AI.
