The automaker says employees and production will move to other GM facilities, but has not identified the locations.

GM plans to shut its Brownstown Battery Assembly Plant south of Detroit because the site's lease is approaching expiration, a company spokesperson said. The spokesperson said the decision was unrelated to GM's electric vehicle strategy.

The company will relocate Brownstown's staff and operations to other GM facilities. It declined to identify which locations would take over the work.

Brownstown assembled battery packs used in the Cadillac Celestiq, the brand's flagship electric vehicle. It also built battery packs and electric drive units for the Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray.

The closure comes as GM continues its electrification efforts following the repeal of incentives for EV production and sales under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Its electric vehicle lineup includes the Chevrolet Silverado EV and the limited-time Chevrolet Bolt.

GM is also studying lithium-manganese-rich and sodium-ion battery chemistries. It is rolling out a $900 million facility intended to accelerate commercialization.
