Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt reportedly holds about 1% of Anthropic

The stake traces to an early funding round, while investors have discussed a valuation of around $1.5 trillion for the AI startup.

Eric Schmidt, Google's former chief executive, holds approximately 1% of Anthropic ahead of the artificial intelligence company's planned initial public offering, according to an October 19 media report.

Citing people familiar with the investment, the report said Schmidt put tens of millions of dollars into Anthropic during its Series A round. Whether he subsequently sold any shares was unclear. His representatives declined to comment, and Anthropic did not immediately provide a response to a request for comment.

A separate media report said some investors had discussed valuing Anthropic at around $1.5 trillion during an investor meeting, compared with earlier expectations of roughly $2 trillion.

Amazon and Google also backed Anthropic early, providing billions of dollars and cloud capacity for its Claude AI models. Schmidt led Google between 2001 and 2011 and subsequently served as executive chairman at parent Alphabet. He left that position in January 2018.
