The pledge follows Anthropic’s proposal to put 5% of its shares into a company-owned public benefit fund, pending shareholder approval.

Elon Musk pledged on October 19, 2026, to distribute a single SpaceX share from his personal holdings to each child in the United States. The proposed gift would be worth about $10.66 billion, using the stock’s Friday closing price.

SpaceX closed Friday at $146.03 a share. The pledge’s estimated value reflects approximately 73 million US children younger than 18. Musk offered no details about how the distribution would work, but indicated that further gifts would follow.

His announcement followed a social media post by artificial intelligence company Anthropic proposing to commit 5% of its shares to a public benefit fund. Responding to that proposal, Musk advocated distributing shares to people directly.

Anthropic said its proposed contribution requires shareholder approval. The Anthropic Public Benefit Fund would be wholly company-owned, and its value could increase alongside the shares.

Anthropic is also planning an initial public offering as soon as November. It announced a confidential filing for the proposed listing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission in June, the same month SpaceX began trading on Wall Street.
