Irene Solaiman said third-party evaluators need more standardized qualifications as testing expands beyond individual AI models.
Mamdani urges stronger AI oversight as he challenges federal approach
The New York mayor pointed to school restrictions and proposed disclosures for AI-created property images as ways to challenge unchecked adoption.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani urged officials to make artificial intelligence companies answer for their technology, criticizing federal oversight and encouraging residents to challenge its expansion into schools, workplaces and other areas of life.
At Manhattan’s Webster Hall, Mamdani discussed AI with actor and activist Ilana Glazer during The People’s AI Assembly. The AI Now Institute hosted the event. He rejected the idea that rapid adoption was unavoidable or that regulation should be left to companies developing the technology.
Mamdani has ordered elementary and middle schools to stop using AI. He also introduced a policy over the summer under which brokers, landlords and real estate platforms would have to label listing images and videos created using AI. That measure seeks to protect residents against deceptive property advertisements.
The mayor said national discussions too often cast AI as a competition with China while sidelining its effects on people. President Donald Trump’s Superintelligence Task Force largely emphasizes self-regulation by powerful AI companies rather than new federal restrictions. Mamdani called for a different approach to oversight and accountability after the current administration.
