Apple cuts employee AI spending limits, report says

Some engineers' daily allowances fell to $200 from $300, while additional reductions are under consideration.

Apple lowered daily AI allowances for some engineers to $200 from $300 in October as it sought to control costs, according to a November 4 media report citing people familiar with the matter.

The company is weighing a further cut that could bring daily limits for some engineering teams to $100. Certain groups outside engineering already have a $100 daily ceiling, which could fall to as little as $25, the report said.

Staff who need more access to AI tools would be able to request exceptions from senior executives. The allowances pay for AI tokens, units of data that models process, including OpenAI's ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini.

The reported spending restrictions come as Apple also seeks to broaden its use of AI throughout its operations. Apple did not immediately provide a comment.

Separately, a media report said Goldman Sachs had limited access to certain AI coding tools after reviewing productivity and risk management.
