Waymo to end Uber partnership in Austin and Atlanta in January 2028

Waymo will shift rides to its own app. The agreement with Uber had been scheduled to expire in May 2028.

Waymo will stop offering rides through Uber in Austin and Atlanta starting in January 2028, co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana said in an interview. Customers in both markets will instead book through Waymo’s own smartphone app.

The change will bring those cities into line with Waymo’s approach elsewhere, where it offers rides directly. The Uber agreement had been due to expire in May 2028.

Mawakana said Uber’s scale was the initial reason for the partnership, but riders could not be certain whether a booking would bring them an autonomous vehicle or a car with a human driver. She said feedback from customers in the two markets underscored the importance of Waymo having a direct relationship with riders.

Uber, which works with multiple robotaxi and autonomous vehicle partners, said Waymo had chosen not to include an option allowing users to specifically book a robotaxi in Uber’s app.
