AirTrunk said on October 7 it would invest an additional $1 billion to support AI workloads at its hyperscale data center campus in Inzai, eastern Japan. The Blackstone-backed company plans to deploy liquid-cooling technology at the 300-plus-megawatt facility.

The company has secured a $1 billion green loan. Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp, MUFG Bank and United Overseas Bank are among the lenders leading the financing.

CEO Robin Khuda said the TOK1 campus was likely to be Japan's first to deploy AI workloads on a large scale. He said geopolitical considerations were prompting more customers considering North Asia to look at Japan.

Khuda said installing AI infrastructure would become harder in the United States and was already difficult in Europe. He expected Asia to benefit from those challenges.
