OpenAI is planning to purchase AI chips from Alphabet's Google, according to a media report on October 27 that cited a person familiar with the matter. The companies compete in search and AI products, but the proposed purchases would broaden their business relationship.

No financial terms or other details were disclosed in the report. OpenAI declined to comment on the plans, while Google did not immediately answer a request for comment made outside regular business hours.

The plans follow an earlier move to use Google's hardware: a June 2025 media report said OpenAI had begun renting its AI chips. OpenAI is also among Nvidia's largest GPU buyers, putting those processors to work training AI models and performing inference.

Google began direct sales of its Tensor Processing Units, or TPUs, to some customers this year. The chips have gained ground as businesses look for less expensive alternatives to Nvidia's leading AI processors and hardware suited to running models. Technology companies are increasing semiconductor and data center spending to serve rising demand for AI computing.
