Nubank and Mercado Pago restrict cryptocurrency transfers

Both companies said customer funds were secure. It remained unclear whether the disruptions involved the same outside provider.

Disruptions involving an outside service provider prompted Brazilian digital lender Nubank and MercadoLibre’s fintech arm, Mercado Pago, to restrict cryptocurrency transfers, the companies said in separate statements on November 6.

Nubank stopped crypto withdrawals and deposits, citing instability at an external data provider. Mercado Pago blocked certain transfers to external wallets and warned of possible deposit delays. It attributed the disruption to an incident affecting a provider of risk-monitoring and anti-money laundering services.

The companies did not disclose the provider’s identity, leaving it unclear whether the same provider was involved in both disruptions. Each said customer funds were secure and its other crypto products continued operating normally.
