Microsoft buyout offer extends to around 60,000 workers

Media reports say eligible employees would receive benefits similar to standard severance as Microsoft cuts costs and adapts its workforce for AI.

Around 60,000 Microsoft employees are being offered buyouts, according to media reports, as the company pursues cost reductions and adjusts its workforce for AI. Eligibility extends to certain teams in the U.S., Canada, India and the U.K.

The reports said the offer applies to vice presidents and employees in lower-ranking roles within those teams. Exclusions cover some staff in data centers, as well as sales and marketing.

Amy Coleman, Microsoft’s chief people officer, described the Voluntary Exit Offer in an October 26 employee note. She said it would provide flexibility and support for eligible workers considering a departure from the company.

Benefits for participants would resemble a standard severance package, the reports said. A separate buyout program earlier in 2026 targeted retirement-age employees. Of roughly 8,750 workers eligible for that offer, more than 30% accepted.

Microsoft did not immediately respond when asked for comment.
