Turo to flag Tesla rentals equipped with FSD driver assistance

Eligible vehicle owners will get a free one-month FSD trial, while renters will receive warnings that the software requires active supervision.

Turo will highlight Tesla vehicles offering Full Self-Driving (Supervised) on its rental marketplace under a collaboration with the automaker. The company said it is working with Tesla to check whether the driver-assistance software is enabled through direct access to Tesla’s API.

Eligible owners renting out their vehicles through Turo will receive a free one-month FSD trial. Turo said the Model 3 ranks third among its most popular vehicles this year, with the Model Y in fourth place.

Renters choosing an FSD-equipped Tesla will receive notices telling them to supervise the system and remain prepared to take control at any time. They can also watch a tutorial made by Tesla. Although FSD requires human oversight, screenshots supplied by Turo show that owners can label their vehicles as “Self-Driving.”

The partnership follows Tesla’s disclosure that around 1.7 million customers worldwide have paid for FSD, compared with more than 10 million vehicles it has built and sold. Tesla also said more than 75% of customers receiving vehicles in North America during the third quarter paid for an FSD subscription.

Tesla has been redesigning some showrooms to put greater emphasis on FSD. Finance chief Vaibhav Taneja said on an earnings call that customers were asking to try the software rather than requesting particular vehicle models.
