Google adds personalized Gemini features to Android Auto

The opt-in feature can draw on connected Google services, including Gmail and Calendar. A rollout to vehicles with Google Built-in is planned in the coming months.

Google said it is adding personalization to its Gemini assistant in vehicles, with an Android Auto rollout beginning October 20. The feature, called Personal Intelligence with Gemini, will reach vehicles equipped with Google Built-in in the coming months.

With drivers’ permission, the assistant can use information from connected services including Gmail, Google Calendar, YouTube, Maps and Google Search history. Google said that information would help Gemini understand users’ preferences, activities and previous experiences.

The company said drivers could make more complex requests in natural language. For example, someone heading to an airport could ask about a flight’s gate and then whether it remains on schedule, with Gemini answering both questions together. The assistant could also alert a driver to a delay affecting a flight listed on their calendar.

Google said users must opt in and can disable the feature whenever they choose. They can also select which apps to connect.

Android Auto runs on a phone and projects functions such as navigation and messaging onto a vehicle’s infotainment display. Google Built-in instead integrates Google software and services directly into the vehicle.
