Cloudflare announced it is acquiring Deno, the startup that developed the Deno programming runtime, to help improve its Workers platform. The companies did not disclose financial terms.

Kenton Varda, principal engineer for Cloudflare Workers, said the acquisition would support changes to the platform and its programming model. Workers lets customers develop software and run it across Cloudflare’s network.

Deno recently introduced celld, an open-source implementation of Workers. Varda said Cloudflare’s team welcomed the project. He also rejected the idea that Workers differs from other cloud platforms to lock customers in, saying the company sees business value in open source and giving users a way to leave.

Dahl said his team would join Cloudflare with the aim of making the Workers programming model a mainstream approach to building servers.

Dahl, who created Node.js, co-founded Deno with Bert Belder. The startup had raised $26 million in total, with Sequoia leading its Series A.
