China's GDP growth picks up to 4.5% in third quarter

Growth exceeded the 4.4% forecast, while authorities have expanded housing and credit support without introducing large-scale stimulus.

China's gross domestic product expanded 4.5% from a year earlier in the third quarter, outpacing analysts' forecast of 4.4%. Growth accelerated from 4.3% in the April-to-June quarter, when it reached its lowest level in more than three years.

Compared with the previous quarter, the economy grew 1.2%, exceeding the expected 1.1% increase. That was also faster than the 0.9% quarterly expansion recorded in the second quarter.

China is targeting full-year growth of 4.5% to 5%. Its top leaders had pledged additional policies to bolster activity as subdued domestic demand and investment held back the wider recovery, even as goods exports performed strongly.

Authorities have recently increased assistance for home buyers and announced steps to channel lower-cost credit toward infrastructure, technology and other sectors. They have stopped short of large-scale stimulus, with the stronger growth reducing pressure for more aggressive measures to reach the annual target.
