Estonian ride-hailing company Bolt and the Greater Paris region plan to begin an autonomous driving pilot in 2028 with vehicles supplied by Franco-Italian automaker Stellantis, the three parties said in a joint statement.

The trial will examine where existing transport services fall short. The partners aim to introduce commercial operations by 2030 in Greater Paris, an area that encompasses municipalities surrounding the French capital.

The first deployments are planned for municipalities in the metropolitan area's northwest. Chinese autonomous driving technology company Pony.ai is being considered as a potential technology provider.

Patrick Ollier, president of the Metropolis of Greater Paris, said the experiment would help guide public decisions and establish conditions for a possible broader rollout.

Bolt separately said it also plans to test self-driving vehicles on Madrid's streets during 2027.
