South Korea's inflation slows to 2.8% in October

Price growth remained above the Bank of Korea's 2.0% target, while a separate poll pointed to further interest rate increases.

South Korean consumer prices increased 2.8% from a year earlier in October, government figures published November 3 showed. That marked a slowdown from September's 2.9%, but inflation continued to exceed the Bank of Korea's 2.0% target.

The annual reading was close to the 2.85% increase economists had forecast in a poll. On a month-to-month basis, the consumer price index gained 0.2%, compared with a 0.3% rise in September.

The central bank is widely expected to raise interest rates in the coming months as global energy prices remain elevated and household borrowing increases. The moderation in October's price growth offered some relief, although inflation remained above the bank's goal.

A separate poll put the consensus forecast for the policy rate's peak at 3.50%. That outlook incorporates an increase in November followed by another during the first quarter of 2027.
