OpenAI said on November 2 that it had hired former U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll as senior counselor for national security modernization, a position the AI startup has newly established.

His responsibilities will include advising company leaders and working with outside partners to explore how advanced AI could support national security and cybersecurity. OpenAI said he would also help its teams better understand the operational requirements of national security organizations worldwide.

The company said Driscoll would work with government officials, industry executives and academic institutions on practical projects supporting what it calls “democratic AI.” Driscoll said his aim was to help the United States and its allies use the technology responsibly.

Driscoll resigned as Army secretary earlier in the year after months of tension with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. President Trump had selected him to participate in negotiations with Moscow and Kyiv aimed at ending the Ukraine war, an unusual diplomatic assignment for someone holding the Army post.
