Amazon backs proposed 960-megawatt nuclear plant in Indiana

American Electric Power would operate the project, which would use 12 X-energy reactors and supply the public grid as well as Amazon data centers.

Amazon is financing development of a proposed nuclear facility in Indiana with 960 megawatts of capacity and would become its first power customer, the companies announced October 19, 2026. American Electric Power (AEP) would run the facility, with X-energy supplying the reactors.

Plans call for 12 Xe-100 small modular reactors at a former coal plant site south of Terre Haute. The coal facility has been demolished. The reactors would connect to the public electricity grid, and Amazon said their output would also supply its data centers.

The agreement is Amazon’s second commercial arrangement with X-energy and is three times the size of their first, announced two years earlier. Amazon led X-energy’s $700 million Series C-1 financing in October 2024. The companies have said their goal is to develop 5 gigawatts of new U.S. nuclear capacity by 2039.

The timetable depends on X-energy delivering its first plant at Dow Chemical’s Seadrift site southeast of Houston, Texas. Construction has not started on that project, where four Xe-100 reactors are intended to supply heat and electricity to the chemical plant.

X-energy said the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission was nearing the end of its review of the Seadrift construction permit. Texas has sued the chemical plant over alleged repeated violations of water and solid-waste rules and permits.
