Jeremy Klaperman has left Automattic less than a month after his elevation to interim chief financial officer. The WordPress.com parent confirmed his departure through communications director Megan Fox, while an external search for a CFO continues, according to a media report.

A person at Automattic said Klaperman was upset that directors were considering outside applicants for the position. His interim appointment had been communicated internally but had never received the board’s legal approval, the person said.

The person also said a dispute with CEO Matt Mullenweg concerning an employee performance-review project prompted Mullenweg to return Klaperman to his earlier job as finance chief of the VIP Enterprise unit. Klaperman then resigned. A company spokesperson declined to explain his departure.

In a post on X dated October 9, 2026, Automattic said its hiring process for critical positions includes assessing external applicants as well as internal candidates. The company said that practice sometimes leads people to resign, but it would not discuss any particular individual.

Klaperman’s appointment followed a governance upheaval in September. Directors had voted to put Mullenweg on leave, but he regained the CEO position within 33 hours. All members of the board subsequently either quit or were fired.

Klaperman was intended to succeed Mark Davies, who left along with chief legal officer Andy Missan. Automattic named a new board in late September.
