Samsung Electronics said October 29 that strong demand for AI chips helped lift its third-quarter operating profit nearly ninefold from a year earlier, setting a record.

The world's largest memory chipmaker earned 107.4 trillion won ($80.04 billion) in operating profit during July to September, compared with 12.2 trillion won a year earlier. The result matched Samsung's estimate.

Investors remained cautious about whether AI spending would last. Rival SK Hynix reported strong earnings and an optimistic outlook a day before Samsung's results, easing concerns about the staying power of AI-related chip profits. Shares of both companies rose following SK Hynix's report.
