Meta postpones commercial terms after publishers raise AI concerns

The changes will take effect on November 20 rather than October 30. Publishers and digital advertisers have complained to EU and UK antitrust authorities.

Meta Platforms said on October 23 that it would postpone new commercial terms until November 20, giving it more time to address concerns from publishers and digital advertisers about the use of their content for artificial intelligence.

The terms had been due to take effect on October 30. Publishers and advertisers complained to antitrust authorities in the EU and UK, arguing that the changes would grant Meta unrestricted rights to use their material for AI services. Meta disputes that interpretation.

A company spokesperson said the extension covers its commercial and self-service advertising terms and would allow further explanations to partners and other stakeholders. Meta also plans to clarify its use of web crawlers and said content owners could continue signaling their preferences through robots.txt.

The EU's antitrust watchdog welcomed the postponement while talks with Meta over the proposed terms continue. It also said it had sought information from companies that had not published summaries describing the data used to train their models.
