Government figures released on October 7 showed that Japan's inflation-adjusted earnings were 1.5% higher in August than a year earlier. August marked the eighth consecutive month with an annual gain, though growth eased from the revised July reading of 2.0%.

Before adjusting for inflation, average total cash earnings reached ¥311,364, up 3.8% on an annual basis. The revised growth rate for July was 4.3%.

Base salaries rose 3.8%, matching the revised July increase. Overtime pay climbed 5.2%, compared with July's revised 4.5%. Special payments, mainly one-time bonuses, recorded no growth in August following a revised increase of 5.3% in July.

The ministry calculated real wages using an inflation rate of 2.2%, unchanged from July. That measure was lower than the 3.1% recorded a year earlier.

Separate figures showed that annual core inflation in Japan's capital picked up in September at the fastest pace in 10 months.
