Zelenskyy Stresses U.S. Role in Securing Peace for Ukraine

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has emphasized that any effective security guarantees aimed at ending the ongoing war with Russia must originate from the United States. In a recent interview, Zelenskyy articulated that without U.S. involvement, achieving meaningful security assurances for Kyiv remains unattainable. His comments come as anticipation builds regarding the forthcoming presidency of Donald Trump, whom Zelenskyy hopes to engage with shortly after Trump's inauguration.

Zelenskyy expressed optimism for a meeting with the incoming U.S. president, praising Trump's commitment to swiftly address the conflict in Ukraine. However, he noted that specific strategies for achieving peace were not detailed by Trump during his campaign. The Ukrainian president highlighted the critical role the White House will play in facilitating security guarantees that could deter further Russian aggression.

Ukrainians are looking to Trump to exert pressure on Moscow to reach a durable peace agreement. Zelenskyy stated, "Without the United States, security guarantees are not possible. I mean these security guarantees that can prevent Russian aggression." This assertion underscores the reliance of Ukraine on U.S. support in navigating the complexities of the ongoing conflict.

Zelenskyy also underscored the necessity of NATO membership for Ukraine, arguing that a ceasefire without robust security assurances could merely provide Russia with an opportunity to regroup and rearm for future hostilities. As the war enters its third year, there is a palpable sense of urgency in Kyiv, where fears linger that a hasty resolution might come at an exorbitant cost to national sovereignty.

With Trump's election sparking renewed hope for a diplomatic resolution, Zelenskyy believes it is essential to convene with the U.S. president to discuss actionable steps toward halting Russian advances. He also pointed out that European governments should have a voice in any negotiations before Ukraine can directly engage with Russian representatives.

In a revealing three-hour interview with U.S. podcaster Lex Fridman, which was published on YouTube, Zelenskyy elaborated on these themes, stressing the need for a collaborative approach to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region.

Zelenskyy's vision aligns with Trump's perspective on achieving "peace through strength," a strategy both leaders believe could effectively address the ongoing crisis. As diplomatic channels open, the focus remains on how best to leverage U.S. influence to secure the necessary guarantees for Ukraine's safety and sovereignty.
