YouTube at 20: A Journey from Pizza Parlors to Global Platforms

YouTube celebrates its 20th anniversary, marking two decades since its inception. Co-founder Jawed Karim uploaded the first video, "Me at the zoo," on April 23, 2005. The platform has transformed from a modest office above a California pizza restaurant into a global phenomenon under Google's ownership. With a staggering 2.5 billion monthly users worldwide, YouTube continues to reshape entertainment and information sharing.

The platform has become a daily staple for many, with 82% of adult internet users in the UK reportedly accessing it. Its vast reach is exemplified by videos like Luis Fonsi's "Despacito," which holds the record for the most views at over 8 billion. Meanwhile, Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You" and PSY's "Gangnam Style" follow with 6 billion and 5.4 billion views, respectively. "Charlie Bit My Finger," a viral sensation since 2007, has nearly 900 million views and earned its creator $85 million in 2024, highlighting the lucrative potential for content creators.

Despite its success, YouTube has faced challenges. In 2019, a US regulatory body fined the platform $170 million for violating children's privacy laws. The issue of data collection from children under 13 also prompted scrutiny under UK data privacy codes. Fact-checking organizations have raised concerns about the platform's role in spreading misinformation.

"No team can go through everything with a fine-toothed comb," stated Tamzin Kraftman.

Kraftman further questioned YouTube's ability to ensure content accuracy and adherence to regulations.

"So the question is how they will ensure everything on there is correct and within regulations."

"I think it's how they use new tools to really stop the spread of misinformation that is going to be their golden ticket [going forward]," Kraftman added.

YouTube remains a hub for trailers, reviews, and news, influencing pop culture and information dissemination. Charlie, the star of "Charlie Bit My Finger," reflected on his experience with fame and the platform's enduring presence.

"It was never not a part of my life, it's always been there," said Charlie.

He humorously noted people's reactions when they learn about his viral fame.

"It's not like I use it as an icebreaker or anything," he said. "And people are like: 'Oh that's cool,' for like five minutes. Or they say: 'I don't know what that is.'"

Despite his success, Charlie acknowledges the fleeting nature of viral fame.

"I could start charging now. But I feel like I've lost my ability," he remarked.
