Vance Predicts Prolonged Conflict in Ukraine as U.S. and Ukraine Forge Economic Partnership

In a recent interview, U.S. Vice President JD Vance expressed his concerns regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, stating that the war “is not going anywhere … it’s not going to end any time soon.” His comments come amid heated debate over U.S. participation in the war. Together, they trace the impact of new economic partnerships signed between the U.S. and Ukraine just last week.

Former President Donald Trump promised to bring the war in Ukraine to an end. He promised he could do that on his first day in office last fall. Though he was hopeful of potential breakthroughs on the peace negotiation front, he recognized the complexity of the situation. Trump’s translation of these complicated realities was to underscore that the final decisions always must be made by Russia and Ukraine themselves.

Perhaps most importantly, in a first-of-its-kind agreement, the U.S. formally recognized an economic partnership with Ukraine. This deal provides Washington with preferential access to natural resources from Kyiv. Secretary of the Treasury of the U.S. Scott Bessent wanted to underscore the value of that partnership. He firmly believes it can be decisive in bringing hostilities to an end.

“This partnership is capable of delivering success for both Washington and Kyiv,” Bessent stated, highlighting the mutual benefits anticipated from the agreement.

The minerals deal, long in the making, is another sign of deepening U.S.-Ukraine ties. This is meant to jointly capitalize on and profit from Ukraine’s abundant reserves of rare earth elements, critical minerals, oil, gas and other resources. Trump has advocated for this deal since his inauguration earlier this year, suggesting it could serve as compensation for the extensive U.S. aid provided to Ukraine throughout the ongoing conflict.

Vance emphasizes that the minerals deal represents a clear sign of progress from the White House in addressing the war’s broader implications. He specifically noted that this initiative builds U.S.-Ukraine ties. It strengthens Ukraine’s economy during the continued war in their country.

In particular, he said that Washington’s strong initiatives to mediate in the conflict should be re-considered if Russia and Ukraine cannot present strong proposals for concluding the war. This warning highlights the need for real action from both sides to make a deal possible.

As events progress, our international community remains vigilant. Importantly, they are looking to see how these partnerships and negotiations play out to determine what Ukraine’s future conflict landscape will look like.
