A coalition of 13 member universities, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Princeton University, is doing something about it. They’ve filed a lawsuit in federal court in Boston to prevent the Trump administration’s planned cuts to federal research funding. The complaint was filed on Monday evening. It would prevent the National Science Foundation (NSF) from implementing cuts that universities say will devastatingly impact scientific research in America.
The National Science Foundation fulfills an essential role in our nation’s research enterprise by supporting fundamental research through federal funding awarded to our nation’s academic institutions. The lawsuit claims that the proposed cuts will “badly undermine scientific research at America’s universities and erode our nation’s enviable status as a global leader in scientific research and innovation,” according to statements made within the legal documents.
The Association of American Universities and two other academic trade associations have partnered with 13 member universities in this legal action. Moreover, they are accompanied by MIT and Princeton. They contend that the intended funding cuts will damage educational organizations. In turn, this will place the entire country at a disadvantage in the long-term.
The lawsuit highlights concerns over the administration’s approach to research funding, emphasizing the need for practices that “streamline funding practices, increase transparency, and ensure that more resources are directed toward direct scientific and engineering research activities,” as suggested by a representative of the NSF.
The plaintiffs insist that the cuts are misguided and even more damagingly, myopic. They claim that increasing such policies will have disastrous effects across the board on the American public.
