The UK's decision to cede sovereignty over the Chagos Islands, after years of negotiations, now awaits the consideration of incoming President Donald Trump. Announced in October, the deal would see the UK maintain control of the military base on Diego Garcia under a 99-year lease while allowing Mauritius to begin resettlement on the other islands. However, the Chagos Islanders, some residing in Mauritius and the Seychelles and others in Crawley, Sussex, remain divided on the fate of their homeland.
The history of the Chagos Islands, also known as the British Indian Ocean Territory, traces back to 1965 when the UK took control from its then-colony Mauritius. Over 1,000 islanders were evicted to pave the way for the construction of the Diego Garcia military base. The recent deal, which had received approval from the Biden administration, is seen by UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy as a strategic move to secure national security interests by maintaining the legal basis of the base.
In October, President Biden lauded the agreement as a "historic" one that ensures the future of a base critical to national, regional, and global security. Despite these endorsements, the UK's decision to pause for Trump's administration to review the deal aims to avoid any diplomatic tensions with the incoming U.S. government.
"Perfectly reasonable for the US administration to consider the detail," a spokesman for Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer stated, reflecting the UK's cautious approach.
Efforts had been underway to finalize the treaty before Trump's inauguration on Monday. The treaty's approval by the Mauritian cabinet was anticipated on Wednesday. However, challenges persist as the UN's highest court previously deemed the UK's administration of the territory "unlawful." Mauritius, which gained independence in 1968, continues to assert its claim over the islands.
Political leaders in the UK express varying opinions regarding the deal. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch voiced strong opposition:
"No way we should be giving up British territory in Chagos," she declared, warning against "rushing a deal which will be disastrous" and potentially costly for British taxpayers.
Reform UK leader and Trump ally Nigel Farage echoed concerns about potential damage to relations with the U.S. president-elect. Meanwhile, Priti Patel criticized what she described as a premature "surrender of the Chagos Islands before President Trump returns to office."
The financial implications of the deal for the UK remain undisclosed. However, concerns about economic costs add another layer of complexity to an already contentious issue.
Under the proposed agreement, Mauritius plans to initiate a resettlement program on some of the islands but not on Diego Garcia. This aspect has fueled divisions among Chagos Islanders about their homeland's future. While some see it as an opportunity for return and restoration, others harbor concerns about long-term implications and sovereignty issues.
The Chagos Islands have long been a geopolitical focal point due to their strategic location in the Indian Ocean.
