Trump’s Declassification Order Sparks Renewed Interest in Kennedy Assassinations

On November 22, 1963, the nation was shaken by the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States, in Dallas, Texas. Over the decades, millions of government records related to this tragic event have been released, yet some crucial information remains classified and redacted. In a recent move, former President Donald Trump issued an executive order directing the release of these withheld records. However, the order does not prompt immediate action; instead, it mandates a plan for releasing the remaining documents to be presented within 45 days.

The directive has sparked considerable attention and speculation, particularly from individuals like Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has long questioned official narratives surrounding both his uncle's and father's assassinations. Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s skepticism extends to the death of Martin Luther King Jr., another pivotal figure whose assassination remains partially shrouded in secrecy.

The filmmaker and investigative efforts have pointed to various inconsistencies in the official accounts of these events. Notably, a recording suggests the presence of a second gun during JFK's assassination, and RFK's own coroner has called for a reopening of his case.

Lee Harvey Oswald, accused of assassinating JFK, was apprehended less than an hour after the event. His subsequent murder on live television two days later, while being transferred to a county jail, only added to the conspiracy theories. The Warren Commission concluded that Oswald acted alone, but many, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr., remain unconvinced.

Similarly, questions linger around the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles on June 5, 1968. Sirhan Sirhan was convicted for RFK's murder, having shot him from the front despite eyewitness accounts that the fatal bullet originated from behind.

Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee, is another historical tragedy clouded by unresolved questions. James Earl Ray confessed to killing King and received a 99-year prison sentence. Yet, doubts persist about whether Ray was solely responsible.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has been vocal about his belief that more information needs to be disclosed to foster transparency and accountability. He expressed gratitude towards Trump for initiating the declassification process.

“Thank you, President Trump for trusting American citizens and for taking the first step down the road towards reversing this disastrous trajectory,” said Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

The move to declassify records has not been without controversy. Jack Schlossberg, JFK's grandson, criticized Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s views on the assassination.

“The truth is a lot sadder than the myth — a tragedy that didn’t need to happen. Not part of an inevitable grand scheme,” Schlossberg remarked.

Schlossberg further accused Robert F. Kennedy Jr. of distorting facts about the assassination.

“Now since Trump did the declassification and RFK Jr. can’t hide behind that anymore," Schlossberg commented.

However, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. remains undeterred in his pursuit of truth and transparency, advocating for an open society.

“The very word ‘secrecy’ is repugnant in a free and open society; and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secrecy,” he stated.

“A government that withholds information is inherently fearful of its citizens’ ability to make informed decisions and participate actively in democracy,” he added.

Trump's order requires collaboration between the director of national intelligence and the attorney general with White House officials to devise a release plan for the JFK records within 15 days. This initiative presents an opportunity to uncover potentially significant historical insights.
