Trump to Announce Comprehensive Trade Agreement with the UK

Today, Donald Trump will release his new trade agreement with the United Kingdom. Today’s announcement is a major win for U.S.-UK relations. The resulting announcement will be made from the Oval Office and streamed online. It follows a stretch of elevated tensions spurred by tariffs that Trump imposed for his own reasons earlier this year. Though Keir Starmer, the UK Prime Minister, will not be in Washington D.C., he is likely to join remotely.

In early April, Trump imposed a 10% blanket tariff on UK imports as part of a wider strategy that he described as “reciprocal” duties affecting nearly every country. The cresting wave of market volatility and public uproar pressured him into a sharp retreat away from the larger reciprocal tariff plan just days after his announcement. He proclaimed a temporary 90-day halt and thereby imposed a national standard 10% tariff for every country in the world but one—China. This action followed an extensive lobbying effort by dozens of countries around the world all clamoring to negotiate new bilateral trade agreements with the U.S.

Keir Starmer’s spokesperson emphasized the importance of the trade agreement, stating that Starmer “will always act in Britain’s national interest.” This sentiment reflects the UK’s perspective on its relationship with the U.S., which 10 Downing Street has described as an “indispensable ally” for Britain’s economic and national security.

The next trade pact could be just as sweeping and perhaps more consequential for the two countries. Trump indicated his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “The agreement with the United Kingdom is a full and comprehensive one that will cement the relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom for many years to come.” He shared his pride from being the first country announced under this new trade framework. The UK really is blazing a trail with this extremely exciting initiative!

Along with this pact, negotiations for further agreements between the two countries are said to be moving at record pace. A spokesperson from 10 Downing Street mentioned that “talks on a deal between our countries have been continuing at pace and the Prime Minister will update later today.” This means there will likely be more announcements in the near future as these conversations continue to develop.

The trade deal is packed with implications. This is particularly important as the UK is already subject to individual U.S. tariffs on imports of steel, aluminum and foreign-made automobiles. Thus far, the impact of the retainer tariffs has prompted outcry across all industries of the UK economy. In short, this deal is a big win for British businesses.

Starmer and Trump first crossed paths during a joint press conference between the two leaders on February 27, 2025 at the White House. The meeting highlighted the two leaders’ joint commitment to developing closer economic relations between their two countries. With the announcement approaching, all eyes in the industry are on the DOT. Political analysts too are hoping to see how this agreement would reshape the future of transatlantic trade relations.
