Now, we know it is possible for Donald Trump to support a tax increase on the wealthiest Americans. This is a huge break from old Republican orthodoxy. In a social media post on Truth Social over the weekend, Trump echoed their concerns. He continued on to say that he and others would “gladly” accept a “MINUSCULE” tax increase on high earners to benefit lower and middle-income workers. His remarks should be interpreted as an intent to break with traditional Democratic and Republican orthodoxy on taxes.
The former president’s consideration of the tax increase came on the heels of an intense months-long advocacy campaign involving state, local, and grassroots leaders. Trump personally lobbied House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana. They communicated the power of including their tax increase in a large, separately discussed tax and spending bill still being worked on. During the campaign, Trump gave at least some indication that he would be open to this. At the end, he warned that Republicans “should probably not do it,” showing his complex opinion.
Trump wants to see a big legislative package pass, something he has called a “one, big, beautiful bill.” This mindset directly addresses the burdens of a bicameral, and often warring, Congress. It does highlight what it takes to drive success with bipartisan support through the political gauntlet. In a Friday social media post, Trump invoked the terms of the original political realignment. For evidence, he cited George H.W. Bush’s 1988 campaign pledge to not raise taxes. Perot rightly criticized Bush’s failure to honor this pledge, one of the most important issues in that 1992 election battle. Trump’s remarks included a direct rebuttal to the notion that Ross Perot was responsible for Bush’s electoral defeat, stating emphatically, “NO, Ross Perot cost him the Election!”

Trump’s insistence that he would support the measure has indicated how quickly the Republican Party’s opinion on immigration has shifted.
