In a significant diplomatic development, a conversation between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin is anticipated this week, amid ongoing ceasefire negotiations in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. This prospective call marks the second publicized interaction between the two leaders since Trump's second term began. Special envoy for Trump, Witkoff, who recently met with Putin in Moscow, has been at the forefront of these discussions, advocating for peace.
Witkoff, who spoke with Putin last month regarding Russia's invasion of Ukraine, has declined to outline specific details of the negotiations. However, he described his recent conversation with Putin as positive and expressed optimism that the prospective call between Trump and Putin would also be constructive. Witkoff emphasized the critical nature of a ceasefire as a first step toward ending the conflict.
"As the president said, he really expects there to be some sort of deal in the coming weeks," Witkoff stated.
During his visit to Moscow on Thursday, Witkoff strongly requested that Putin refrain from killing the thousands of Ukrainian troops being pushed out of Kursk. He believes there might soon be a ceasefire, a sentiment echoed by Trump's expectation of a possible deal that could bring an end to the war.
The special envoy's involvement extends beyond Moscow, as he was also present in Saudi Arabia for a ceasefire deal brokered by U.S. officials. Witkoff's engagements highlight his active role in facilitating dialogue and seeking resolutions to the ongoing conflict.
Trump expressed his hope for peace, stating there is "a very good chance that this horrible, bloody war can finally come to an end."
