President Donald Trump highlighted an investment agreement led by BlackRock, in collaboration with Hong Kong's CK Hutchison, as a key step in this endeavor.
President Trump emphasized the canal's significance during a recent announcement.
"The Panama Canal was built by Americans, for Americans, not for others but others could use it," said Donald Trump.
The canal, completed under American supervision, transitioned to Panamanian control in 1999 following the Torrijos-Carter Treaties signed in 1977 by then-President Jimmy Carter. This treaty outlined a phased handover of the canal to Panama, a move that has since stirred debate over foreign influence.
The Trump administration, spearheaded by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, seeks to counter China's growing presence in the region.
