Serene Francie Rosenberg, 48, was arrested on suspicion of murder following a fatal collision in Dana Point, California. The incident occurred when she allegedly drove through an intersection against a red arrow signal, striking a transit van and killing 88-year-old Melvin Joseph Weibel. The crash took place about 60 miles south of Los Angeles, and Weibel was pronounced dead at the scene.
Rosenberg's actions have led to serious legal repercussions. She faces five charges, including murder and driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury. This arrest marks a troubling chapter in Rosenberg's history, as she has three prior convictions. Notably, in 2011, she pled guilty to a misdemeanor for driving with a blood-alcohol level of .08% or more. The following year, she faced multiple charges, including child abuse and endangerment, along with another DUI offense.
The collision is currently under investigation by the Orange County Sheriff's Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team. In light of the incident, Rosenberg has been placed on administrative leave from her position as President of OCMBC Inc., one of the largest wholesale mortgage lenders in the United States. Rabi Aziz, CEO of OCMBC, released a statement expressing sympathy for those affected by the tragedy.
"This has been a difficult time for everyone affected by this tragic event, and our hearts go out to those impacted," – Rabi Aziz, CEO of OCMBC Inc.
Following Rosenberg's administrative leave, John Hamel has been appointed as the interim President at OCMBC. The company is now facing scrutiny not only for the incident but also for its leadership during this tumultuous time.
As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of Weibel, whose life was cut short due to the alleged reckless behavior of Rosenberg. The impact of this tragedy resonates beyond the immediate families involved, highlighting ongoing concerns regarding driving under the influence and road safety.
