Rodney Hinton, pictured above, has been charged with aggravated felony murder. This devastating news comes on the heels of the death of Hamilton County Sheriff’s Deputy Larry Henderson calling the greater Cincinnati region to pray for law enforcement. It’s a welcome development coming on the heels of Hinton’s son, Ryan Hinton, being fatally shot by a Cincinnati police officer on May 1. The circumstances reflect the constant struggle and pain experienced by their families in neighborhoods still reeling from the effects of violence and death.
Ryan Hinton, an unarmed 18-year-old, had been shot across seven different parts of his body by a police officer. He was brandishing the weapon and extended magazine just outside the parking lot of an apartment complex. At least two witnesses said she fell down but got back up and was still running with the weapon as she went between two dumps. According to the officer involved, Ryan pointed the gun at him, at which point the officer had no choice but to discharge his weapon. Despite the quick medical aid afforded by the responding officers, Ryan died from his injuries on the scene.
The Fatal Encounter
What should have been a peaceful May 1 turned tragic when an arrest turned deadly for Ryan Hinton. This incident sent a shockwave of hurt and anger through the entire community. As the police narrative would have it, when officers confronted Ryan, he was armed and an immediate threat.
While escaping, he fell, but got back up, keeping on the run. What raised the issue to a serious threat was when he reportedly pointed his gun at the arriving officer. In reaction, the officer shot his gun at point blank range, hitting Ryan four to five times.
Police failed to provide aid to Ryan right after the shooting, coming dangerously close to killing him in the process. He died on the scene, and his untimely passing left his grieving family and community.

A Father’s Descent into Tragedy
Outside of the national spotlight, the violent aftermath of Ryan’s death has had disastrous effects for his father, Rodney Hinton. On May 2, just a day after his son’s devastating police encounter, Rodney snapped and plowed into Deputy Larry Henderson. The deputy was directing traffic at the time, at a University of Cincinnati commencement ceremony. The collision killed Henderson instantly. He was hit twice—first in the chest and then in the arm.
Henderson was highly regarded within the law enforcement community and had colleagues who fondly remembered their time working with him. Newtown Police Chief Tom Synan reflected on Henderson’s character, stating:
“This is devastating. I had worked with him since we were young cops.”
Deputy Henderson’s absence has left a huge void in his department. It has further harmed the entire community he spent his life pursuing and protecting.
“Always one of the first to check on and help you. You didn’t need to ask for him, he was already there.”
The perils facing Rodney Hinton are now grave after these unfortunate occurrences. He is being currently held in a regional jail situated in another county east of Cincinnati. This is for his own protection while the investigations are ongoing. His charge of aggravated murder should make all of us realize just how serious this situation can be. This would have catastrophic consequences for him and his family.
Legal Repercussions and Community Response
Though heartbreaking, the sequence of events has opened a floodgate of discussions on several key issues. These concerns encompass community safety, the demand for mental health intervention for families who experience violence, and police officers’ duty to act in high-stress scenarios. Our community is justifiably upset over how these incidents are symptomatic of deeper societal issues.
As details continue to emerge, local leaders and residents alike are calling for a thorough investigation into both the police shooting and Hinton’s actions that led to Deputy Henderson’s death. Both tragedies have elicited an outpouring of grief and remembrance from within the communities that knew both men.
