Tragedy Unfolds at UPMC Memorial: Hostage Situation Turns Deadly

Chaos descended upon UPMC Memorial in York, Pennsylvania, on Saturday when a violent hostage situation erupted, claiming the lives of two individuals, including a police officer. The incident unfolded around 10:35 a.m. when Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, aged 49, entered the hospital and seized control of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), taking staff members hostage. As the situation escalated, Archangel-Ortiz fired multiple shots, resulting in the tragic death of Officer Andrew Duarte and injuries to several others.

Authorities revealed that Archangel-Ortiz had visited a friend at the hospital days prior and interacted with the staff. On the day of the shooting, he stormed into the facility, binding a nurse's hands with zip ties before leading a staff member into a hallway while brandishing a firearm. In the ensuing chaos, three police officers were shot, one fatally. Officer Duarte, a 30-year-old member of the West York Borough Police Department, succumbed to his injuries.

"Officer Duarte was one of the best of us," said Gov. Josh Shapiro.

"He is to be commended for a life of service, albeit one cut too short," added Gov. Josh Shapiro.

The hospital, which opened in 2019 and features 104 private patient rooms, became a scene of pandemonium. Alongside Officer Duarte, a doctor, a nurse, and a custodian were also injured by gunfire. Another staff member sustained injuries while attempting to flee the gunfire. The motive behind Archangel-Ortiz's actions remains unclear as investigators continue their search for answers.

Authorities are also working to determine whether Officer Duarte was struck by Archangel-Ortiz or by "friendly fire" from fellow officers during the confrontation. The investigation remains ongoing as officials piece together the tragic events of that morning.

Archangel-Ortiz was no stranger to law enforcement. Earlier this month, he faced charges for driving on a suspended license and had a history of legal troubles dating back to October 2016, when he was charged with harassment and contempt for a court order. Despite his prior interactions with the law, his motives for this devastating act remain shrouded in mystery.

The incident has left the community in shock and mourning. Officer Duarte, who joined the West York Borough Police Department in June 2022 after serving with the Denver Police Department, was remembered fondly by colleagues and officials alike.
