The Risbergska adult educational centre in Orebro, Sweden, was the site of a tragic and unprecedented mass shooting on Tuesday afternoon, marking the worst such incident in the country’s history. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described the harrowing event as "the worst mass shooting in Sweden's history," a sentiment echoed by the shock and grief that reverberated throughout the nation and beyond. Initial reports indicated five injuries; however, the grim reality soon emerged with a total of 11 casualties, including the suspected gunman.
The suspect, identified by Sweden's public broadcaster SVT as 35-year-old Rickard Andersson, was found deceased at the scene. Evidence suggests that Andersson took his own life following the attack. The police investigation confirmed that an automatic firearm was used during the assault. This tragic event has raised significant concerns about gun violence and safety within Sweden, particularly in educational institutions.
The Risbergska centre provides crucial educational opportunities for adults over 20 who have not completed primary or secondary education, along with Swedish language classes for immigrants. On that fateful Tuesday, at precisely 12:33 local time (11:33 GMT), police received reports of active gunfire at the centre. The immediate response included locking down six schools and a nearby restaurant, with clear instructions for residents to stay indoors or avoid the area altogether.
"We heard three shots, one after the another, and panicked. My teacher shouted: 'shut the doors, lock them and hide,'" recounted Hellen Werme, a student present during the shooting.
Health authorities have reported that three women and two men remain in stable yet critical condition after undergoing surgeries for gunshot wounds. The community remains on edge as law enforcement continues its investigation into what motivated Andersson to carry out such a devastating attack.
"It's a changing situation. The information we gave earlier is still valid, but may change later," stated Roberto Eid Forest, underscoring the fluid nature of the ongoing investigation.
Gun laws in Sweden are notably strict, requiring individuals to certify their need for a weapon license. Despite these regulations, more than 5% of Sweden's population legally own firearms. The incident at Orebro has ignited widespread debate about gun control and the adequacy of current safety measures in place to protect citizens from similar threats.
"As a child he was different but lively," shared a relative of Andersson, shedding light on his background. "He did well at school. But recent years were tough for him."
The same relative further revealed that Andersson had become increasingly isolated in recent times.
"Before, he had a friend he spent a lot of time with, but not now. He wants to be on his own. He doesn't seem to like people much."
