Zebra striping, the practice of alternating alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, is gaining traction as a method to reduce alcohol consumption and improve hydration. This idea, most common among Gen Z and Millennials, inspires people to socialize in party scenarios while avoiding heavy consumption. By following a simple 1:1 ratio, patrons can opt for classic cocktails paired with refreshing non-alcoholic drinks, providing a balanced approach to drinking.
Xander Jones, the longtime manager of Etch in Nashville, Tennessee, has seen this shift happen in real-time. He adds that the demand for nonalcoholic options has skyrocketed in recent years. “A couple of years ago, I’d get a couple of guests asking for non-alcoholic beers every few months, but now it’s pretty much expected that you have a few non-alcoholic options on your menu,” he stated. Overwhelmingly, this change represents a larger shift in society as people want to make healthier decisions without sacrificing the products they love.
Health Benefits of Zebra Striping
Zebra striping offers several notable health benefits. By switching off between an alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink, people can both enjoy a drink and lower the amount of alcohol they consume. This bottom’s up practice will leave you feeling less hungover, better hydrated, and more intentional about your drinking.
Carolina Schneider, MS, RD, one of the program’s co-creators, stresses that for those who drink moderately, zebra striping is a “practical and sustainable choice.” She thinks it frees people to have more social experiences without the downsides of over-consumption of alcohol. “While it’s absolutely possible to enjoy alcohol in moderation and still maintain good health, it’s no secret that alcohol isn’t particularly beneficial,” Schneider added.
Additionally, the trend can build healthier social conditions. Consumers are increasingly looking for healthier options. Alternative choices, such as zebra striping, let people have fun while altogether avoiding the negative effects of excessive alcohol consumption.
Cocktail Pairings and Recommendations
Experts suggest several cocktail pairings to get the most out of your zebra striping experience. For instance, the classic gin and tonic with the non-alcoholic cucumber mojito is a delightful pairing and refreshing in every which way. Second most popular is a Manhattan with a cranberry-lime-sparkling water combo. On top of that, people will have the opportunity to sip a white negroni and then try an NA version made with a non-alcoholic amaro replacement.
“Non-alcoholic drinks provide an opportunity to experiment with flavors that can complement or cleanse the palate between more intense alcoholic beverages,” she explained. This considered philosophy improves our collective enjoyment of drinking and encourages moderation.
Raya promotes a new bartending style known as “bridging,” introduced in cocktails made with spirits like rum or tequila. This approach is about choosing drinks that complement each other while simultaneously taking your tasting to another level.
The Future of Drinking Culture
As zebra striping becomes increasingly popular, it is indicative of a larger, more society-wide change — normalization of alcohol consumption. As it stands, a 2023 Gallup Poll found 38% of adults under 35 say they do not drink at all. That statistic is a strong testament to the increasing trend of people seeking moderation and mindfulness with their drinking habits.
Jones sees zebra striping as a natural progression from the ‘sober curious’ movement. “I think of it as a more enduring successor to the ‘sober curious’ movement. It doesn’t prescribe absolute temperance but encourages guests to be more conscious of how much they’re consuming,” he remarked.
Zebra striping isn’t going to meet everyone’s aesthetic. What it does do is create a cute, chic solution for anyone who wants to maintain their party girl lifestyle while being a little more health-minded.
