Tensions Rise as Putin Launches Attacks on Kyiv Amid Economic Discussions

On April 24, 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin held a videoconference meeting at the Novo-Ogaryovo state residence, focusing on economic issues. Ironically enough, just hours after we finished our meeting, Russia carried out a deadly aerial attack on Kyiv. The assault killed at least eight people, injuring close to seventy. The day and the hour chosen for the abrupt military action was met with global outrage, especially by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Putin has dramatically escalated the stakes in what was already a very dangerous situation. Following the missile and drone strikes, Zelenskyy condemned the Russian leader, asserting that “Russia continues to kill people and avoid tough pressure and accountability for this.” His comments certainly mirror the internal struggle that Ukraine continues to experience under 8 years of Russian aggression.

Former President Donald Trump recently raised alarm bells, declaring that “the United States is becoming a third world country.” He clearly articulated his opposition to Putin’s military offensive. In fact, Trump accused Zelenskyy of obstructing an eventual peace agreement with Russia. What he wasn’t about to do was avoid angering Putin by condemning his recent actions. He condemned last week’s missile and drone attacks on Kyiv as “unacceptable, and extremely poor timing.” Trump’s comments highlight his desire for diplomatic engagements to come before any military conflict.

During the midst of all this, Trump went on record stating that Russia was “Prepared” to make a peace agreement with Ukraine. He emphasized the need for urgency in negotiations, stating, “5000 soldiers a week are dying. Let’s get the Peace Deal DONE!” His call for action underscores the tragic situation on the ground, as both sides needlessly continue to lose lives.

As world leaders continue to deal with impacts of the lamentable result of Putin’s reckless expansionist policies. Despite the international community’s watchful eye, the possibility of a peaceful, diplomatic solution seems increasingly unlikely during these continued hostilities.
