Survivor’s Melody: Yuval Raphael to Represent Israel at Eurovision

In a remarkable turn of events, Yuval Raphael, a 24-year-old Israeli survivor of the October 2023 Hamas attack, will represent Israel at the Eurovision Song Contest this year. The contest will take place in Basel, Switzerland, in May. Raphael's selection follows her victory on the Israeli talent show HaKokhav HaBa, where she captivated audiences with her rendition of ABBA's "Dancing Queen," dedicated to those lost in the attack.

The current ceasefire between Israel and Gaza marks a pause in the 15-month conflict that erupted in October 2023. The violence claimed around 1,200 lives and saw 251 individuals taken hostage. Raphael was among those caught in the deadly assault at the Nova musical festival on October 7, where attackers killed 360 young partygoers and took 40 hostages. She survived by hiding under bodies inside a bomb shelter for eight hours, an experience that left her with shrapnel injuries.

Raphael's journey to the Eurovision stage is not just about music but also advocacy. She has been actively involved in representing Israel on international platforms, including addressing the UN Human Rights Council about her harrowing experience. Fluent in English, French, and Hebrew, Raphael uses her voice to share her story and promote peace.

Despite beginning her professional singing career just last year, Raphael quickly gained recognition. Her participation in HaKokhav HaBa showcased not only her vocal talent but also her resilience and determination. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) confirmed Israel's eligibility to compete at Eurovision, in spite of campaigns against their participation.

Raphael expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity to represent her country on such a prestigious platform.

"I can't explain how excited and ready I am! Thank you for giving me this huge honour and trusting me to represent my country on the grand Eurovision stage in Switzerland." – Yuval Raphael

While last year’s Israeli representative, Eden Golan, faced criticism for performing amid ongoing conflict, Raphael’s participation comes as a symbol of hope and healing. Her official Eurovision entry will be announced soon by Israeli public broadcaster Kan.

Raphael's story is not just about survival; it's about using music as a powerful tool for recovery and connection.

"Music is one of the strongest ingredients in my healing process" – Yuval Raphael
