The BBC has issued an apology to actress Amanda Abbington following allegations of inappropriate behavior by professional dancer Giovanni Pernice during the 2023 series of "Strictly Come Dancing." The broadcaster has upheld complaints of verbal bullying and harassment against Pernice, though claims of physical aggression were dismissed. Pernice, along with fellow dancer Graziano Di Prima, has subsequently exited the show's line-up amidst these controversies.
Opera singer Wynne Evans, known for his role in the Go.Compare adverts, has also found himself in the spotlight. He recently stepped back from the "Strictly Come Dancing" live tour and his BBC Radio Wales show to focus on his wellbeing. This decision comes after Evans apologized for making a sexualised remark during a group photo session at the tour's launch.
"I've agreed with the BBC that I'll take some time out from my radio show and the Strictly Live tour, as well as my other public commitments, to prioritise my wellbeing." – Wynne Evans
The news of Evans' departure follows an incident involving Katya Jones, a professional dancer on the show. During an episode in October, Jones appeared to reject a high-five from Evans and moved his hand from her waist. Her recent farewell to Evans was poignant.
"I will miss you my darling boy" – Katya Jones
Evans expressed regret over his actions and thanked his colleagues for their support.
"I am deeply sorry for the pain my inappropriate actions have caused, and plan to take this time for self-reflection." – Wynne Evans
"Apologies to those I won't get to see at the remaining performances and I'm grateful to my fellow tour gang for all the amazing support they have given me." – Wynne Evans
As the tour continues with 16 performances left on its schedule, including a stop in Liverpool and concluding at the O2 in London on February 9, the absence of Evans is notable. His departure has raised questions about the conduct expected of public figures in entertainment settings.
In response to these incidents, the BBC announced new welfare measures for "Strictly Come Dancing" last July. These initiatives include introducing chaperones in rehearsal rooms, adding two new welfare producers, and providing additional training for dancers, the production team, and crew. These steps aim to safeguard participants and ensure a respectful environment.
