The Pittsburgh Steelers have made a significant move to bolster their offensive lineup by acquiring wide receiver DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks. The trade involves the Steelers sending a 2025 second-round draft pick to Seattle. In addition to the trade, the Steelers have agreed to a five-year, $150 million contract extension with Metcalf, ensuring his presence on the field for the foreseeable future.
Metcalf's performance in 2024 was notable, as he averaged 15.0 yards per reception and 66.1 yards per game. Over the course of the season, he collected 66 receptions for 992 receiving yards and recorded a career-low of five touchdowns. His season was interrupted when he missed two games due to an MCL injury sustained in Week 7. Following his return, Metcalf averaged just under six targets per game.
The Steelers' general manager, Omar Khan, had emphasized that addressing the quarterback position was the team's top priority during the offseason. However, acquiring a reliable big-play pass catcher was also high on their agenda. With Metcalf's addition, the Steelers have added much-needed depth and star power to their wide receiver room, which previously lacked behind standout George Pickens.
George Pickens himself had an impressive 2024 season, averaging 64.3 yards per game and 15.3 yards per catch. Khan expressed a strong desire to keep Pickens in Pittsburgh, as he is eligible for an extension this offseason. The acquisition of Metcalf not only enhances the team's receiving corps but also complements Pickens' abilities on the field.
DK Metcalf, originally a second-round pick in 2019, has been a consistent performer since entering the league. He has averaged 1,054 receiving yards and eight touchdowns per season while maintaining an average of 14.4 yards per reception throughout his career. His presence is expected to significantly impact the Steelers' offensive strategy moving forward.
In addition to acquiring Metcalf, the Steelers and Seahawks also executed a swap of their 2025 sixth and seventh-round picks as part of the trade deal. This strategic move further aligns with Pittsburgh's efforts to strengthen its roster and enhance its competitiveness in upcoming seasons.
