SpaceX's highly anticipated Crew-10 mission to the International Space Station (ISS) is poised for launch, marking a significant milestone in space exploration. Scheduled for mid-March, the mission features an international team of four spacefarers led by NASA astronaut Anne McClain. They will take off from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, aboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule named Endurance.
The Crew-10 mission is part of NASA's commercial crew program, which enables NASA to collaborate with private companies like SpaceX to transport astronauts and cargo to orbit. This partnership aims to streamline access to space while fostering innovation and reducing costs. The upcoming mission will be powered by a Falcon 9 rocket, continuing the legacy of successful launches under this program.
Anne McClain will command the mission, with fellow NASA astronaut Nichole Ayers, Japanese astronaut Takuya Onishi, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Kirill Peskov comprising the rest of the crew. The spacefarers arrived at the Kennedy Space Center on Friday, where they will prepare for their upcoming journey. They are scheduled to participate in a dress rehearsal ahead of the launch, during which they will don their SpaceX space suits.
"We are going to take a little bit of an adventure," said McClain, encapsulating the spirit of exploration driving this mission.
The launch was initially delayed but is now confirmed for mid-March. Once launched, the Crew-10 spacecraft is expected to reach the ISS by the next morning. This mission holds particular significance as it will enable the return of the Boeing Starliner crew, who have been stationed at the ISS since June. The Starliner crew consists of astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams.
The Dragon capsule being used for this mission, Endurance, boasts a history of successful flights. It has been "previously flown," underscoring SpaceX's commitment to sustainability and cost-effectiveness in its operations.
